Nebraska (LB 138) defined e-bikes using the same three-class definition system, but its definition includes additional language beyond the standard definition. An e-bike may have two, three, or four wheels; a saddle or seat for the rider and may produce no more than one brake of horsepower. New Mexico’s new law requires e-bike manufacturers to affix a label displaying the classification number, top assisted speed and motor wattage to each e-bike. The law prohibits an individual from modifying the top assisted speed or motor wattage of an e-bike without replacing the label.

According to the latest data from NHTSA, 7,388 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2021, compared to 6,565 pedestrians killed in 2020; a 12.5% increase. This is the highest number of pedestrian deaths since 1981 when 7,837 pedestrians died in traffic crashes. Indiana (HB 1015) established a Worksite Speed Control Pilot Program to enforce construction and worksite speed limits. The Indiana Department of Transportation (Indiana DOT) can purchase up to four worksite speed control systems that must be operated by a trained and certified employee of the Indiana DOT or a police officer. Maryland (HB 435) authorized no more than six mobile or stationary speed monitoring systems to be used on Maryland Route 210.

This increase translates to an average of approximately 488 deaths each day from excessive drinking during 2020–2021. These findings are consistent with another recent study that found a larger increase in fully alcohol-attributable death rates among females compared with males (8). The average annual number of deaths from excessive alcohol use among males increased by 25,244 (26.8%), from 94,362 deaths during 2016–2017 to 119,606 during 2020–2021 (Table 2).
